PETA Keeps Trying

Where the fish caught the manOnce again PETA has applied for two more offshore lighthouses, Cleveland Ledge Lighthouse and Whaleback Ledge Lighthouse. There has not been another group step forward with interest in Cleveland Ledge, but the American Lighthouse Foundation was planning to send a letter of interest on Whaleback Ledge, as the ALF has already been maintaining it under a lease.

The Portsmouth (NH) Herald News has published a story about PETA’s latest efforts to convince the National Park Service that a lighthouse is best used to educate people that fish are “inquisitive and loving.” According to Seacoast Online:

Even if PETA is the only applicant, Paula Santangelo, GSA Media Spokeperson, said its ownership of Whaleback would not be a done deal. The application would be reviewed and PETA evaluated by the National Park Service, which would decide whether to offer the lighthouse to the agency, Santangelo said. If the application was rejected, the lighthouse could go to public sale.

If comments I’ve read over the internet are any indication, PETA’s efforts to snag a lighthouse are not going over too well, even with some of their own members.

From Millie, posting at Associated Content:

quoteoh, so this is where our donations go to? not helping the animals, but trying to buy lighthouses? think of all the animals that could be saved with that money!quote

From Debbie of New England Lighthouse Blog:

quote Does anyone wonder what extreme measures PETA will use to teach dolphins to eat vegetable “fish” instead of the dolphin’s daily 30-pound diet of real fish, anchovies, herring, sardines, and squid or will dolphins be exempt from their Vegan campaign?

Lighthouses were never constructed to be a Vegetarian crusade against a traditional well-balanced diet. Furthermore, the federal government is giving them to eligible non-profit organizations that will preserve and maintain them per their legal guidelines not PETA’s guidelines.quote

Lighthouse News will have an update in the next day or two on this unusual lighthouse story. In the meantime, feel free to leave your own thoughts and opinions.
