Michigan City Applies For Lighthouse

According to a story in the Post Tribune, Michigan City, Indiana, has sent in a letter of interest for the government’s offer to take over the Michigan City East Pierhead Light. But the Mayor of the town, Chuck Oberlie doesn’t want anybody to get too excited. “It wouldn’t be used for recreation,” he said. It could be anywhere from six months to two years before any recommendation is made on the transfer.
The East Pierhead Light was excessed by the Coast Guard earlier this year, and applications for it closed July 2. The city sent in their letter of interest by Jun 29, according to the story. If the site tour goes well, Oberlie said the lighthouse would be used strictly as a physical feature for photos and for Coast Guard purposes.
This is one of only two lighthouses built in Indiana, both in Michigan City. The first tower was constructed in 1858 and this one was added in 1904. The older tower was decommissioned at that time, and the Fresnel Lens was transferred to the East Pierhead.
