Lighthouse Keeper Wanted: Not to tend the lights, but to keep the grounds mowed, the buildings maintained, and be an “ambassador” to the city of Racine, Wisconsin. Job perks include five acres with a beach, and a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. Competition for the job is expected to be stiff, as over 135 applications were received last time the job came open. It’s not all good, though, as the departing keepers state in this story in JS Online.
Wind Point Lighthouse will be undergoing renovations this year, as it was one of two winners in the Jeld-Wen Windows Lighthouse contest. It will be receiving a new coat of paint, and new windows and doors. The other winner was Thomas Point Shoals, Maryland. A full release of the winners for this year is here (.pdf file).
The Journal Times also has a story about what it was like to be a keeper in the past, before the automation. Information on the scheduled tours is also available via their story. They’ll be held the first Sunday in August, September and October.
